Everything Bacon from Made Whole

We recently discovered Cristina Curp of The Castaway Kitchen. After finding out she’d just moved to the area, and we had her and other bloggers (A Tribe Beyond Blessed and Coconut and Kettlebells) over for our July 4th (paleoish) Potluck. She brought Everything Bacon, Curried Vegetables, and some sweets from her new book Made Whole. It was the first I’d heard or seen it; I loved that her book is really adaptable to so many people’s eating styles (Paleo, Keto, AIP). Potluck plate includes our Brisket, our Broccoli Raisin Salad, and the Curried Vegetables from Made Whole. I’d already eaten more than my share of the Everything Bacon dipped in Fauxmato Marinara! Take this Curried Vegetable Salad, if you would. It’s creamy and spiced and delicious and barely made it to dinner thanks to snacking! We also had a few neighbors over during the potluck, and two of them asked if they could take a picture of the recipe for these veggies – it was THAT good – and they’re not Paleo or AIP! After the potluck, this week, we asked the boys to pick their “final meals” in our kitchen. We are undergoing construction and will be cooking on […] read more

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently. read more

Kids and The Low-Carb Lifestyle

Some pediatricians have actually been prescribing a low-carb diet for a choose group of children for years, and exactly what they have seen is very upsetting. The ketogenic diet was developed more than 80 years earlier in order to manage seizures that did not respond to the anticonvulsant medications that were available then. There are now lots of medications that help to manage seizures but the ketogenic diet is still utilized. The bright side is that it does stop or decrease the frequency of seizures. The bad news is that it has some unhealthy effects on the heart.
The ketogenic diet is not identical to the Atkins diet. Although it consists of hardly any carbohydrate it likewise has little protein, and 90 percent of calories come from fat. As you might imagine, keeping a child on this extremely unpalatable diet is every hard, and numerous parents merely quit when faced with temper tantrums and food-stealing.
In a research study done at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, children on a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet developed marked increases of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, all of which are risk elements for coronary artery illness. These results persisted for a minimum of 24 months. Children on a ketogenic diet are also at threat of kidney stones, which are normally unusual throughout youth.
There’s a lot of proof that low blood sugar level levels, an unavoidable effect of a low-carbohydrate diet, produce memory and mood issues, irritability and aggressive behavior. Those who live with diabetic patients are aware that an overdose of insulin causes a serious drop in blood sugar that can cause seizures or death. It does not take any fantastic leap of logic to conclude that a diet that results in frequent low blood sugar level levels isn’t good for the brain. For the developing brain of a child, even an adolescent, it might lead to specific catastrophe and social catastrophe.
There’s no single option to youth obesity
What a child eats is just one factor in exactly what is plainly an epidemic of childhood obesity. At any age, weight gain comes from utilizing too couple of calories as well as eating a lot of. Computer games, television watching, lack of athletics classes, reliance on Mom for transport, interfered with family conditions and worry of criminal offense in city communities are just a few of the reasons exercise has actually taken a nosedive amongst children in the previous generation, a period throughout which type 2 diabetes in kids has increased tenfold. Mindful analysis reveals that almost all the fat gain of modern kids is due to their inactive practices, not to their eating habits.
Diabetes will quickly be an excruciating burden
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report that must have stunned the actuaries of medical insurance companies. Of children born in the year 2000, one-third will develop type 2 diabetes as adults. For African-American and Hispanic females that number will be around 50 percent.
Who will spend for the health care expenses of one-third of our population, a group that will be not able to support themselves because of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, amputation of limbs and blindness? The very fact that contemporary medicine has the ability to lengthen the lives of these sufferers just contributes to the massive cost of extra decades of survival. Directors of kidney dialysis centers currently agree that they are behind in the capability to deal with the present population of diabetics whose kidneys have been destroyed. Yet, this is where our children are headed, as even 6-year-olds are now being diagnosed with the disease.
Healthy nutrition in a free fall
French french fries are veggies in just the loosest possible usage of the word, however they make up 25 percent of the typical child’s veggie consumption. The worth of a diet that is high in vegetables and fruits can not be overestimated. Cardiovascular disease and cancer are much less typical face to faces with a high consumption of these foods, but on any offered day in the United States, 40 percent of kids have actually not eaten a single vegetable. In actual surveys of children’s consuming practices, no fruit or vegetable– even French french fries– makes it to the leading ten.
High-fructose corn syrup is the only sweetener of soft drinks in the United States. It makes up more than 15 percent of the calorie consumption of the average kid; it is more than double that amongst many teenagers. More than just adding to a currently extreme calorie consumption, fructose bypasses the typical digestive procedures and results in formation of heart-damaging chemicals and contributes to the complications of diabetes.
This is only a sample of the concerns that I have actually discussed in my book The Keto Lifestyle (www.keto4energy.com/KetoBook). read more
